Ceilometer wants to gather usage data from all the OpenStack services. Ironic is the gatekeeper for remote IPMI access to the machines it has provisioned. Thus, Ironic should emit usage data!
This was discussed briefly at the last summit, and recently the conversation was re-initiated on the mailing list. The Ironic team was not idle on this topic during Icehouse -- we discussed it, checked with two vendors, talked a bit with ceilometer folks, and drafted: * a specificiation of the message format to pass this data to Ceilometer, and * a specification for the internal driver API by which all drivers should present their hardware metrics (since different vendors may model it differently).
